My passion started at the age of 11 when my father and mother, albeit purely middle class decided to buy a personal computer for the house at the moment each computer was in the range of Lm1000 so around €2400. However at the time it was impossible for most families except with the help of the bank and monthly instalments. I have been working in the IT industry in one way or another from 1997. At the age of 17 I was already working with the largest software house in Malta. However, for as long as I remember I loved technology and apart from my main job i always kept myself busy with several other projects which interest me.
This decision came after having owned an Amiga 500 for around 4 years and was already coding with BASIC on the AMIGA itself thanks to a free programming "course" with every unit sold. On the AMIGA I started also using the first graphic design products. By 1996, I had internet at home and little known but I created the second ever Maltese website on Geocities with self learned HTML. I remember the first time I dialled into the "internet" instead of a private BBS.
Although I aced every exam I ever took, I never was one for University theory learning, hence at 17 I had already applied to work as a full-time junior programmer. At Crimsonwing I found a nurturing environment, that took a silly 17 year old and progressed him through, programmer, analyst programmer and senior analyst/programmer, all the time working on massive software projects both locally and offshore.
I was never a prodigious programmer, I didn't see code in my sleep (I saw solutions but not code) I was never a super coder with super powers, however, my edge was always in having equal expertise in management, graphic design, analytics and coding, by the time I was 21 I knew how to code in 7 different programming languages, as well as became quite apt at Databases, by my forte' was always online applications.
in 2001 I started my first job in Education, whilst also keeping a business going with 5 employees, I spent 5 years lecturing at MCAST IICT, in my fifth year at MCAST I moved to Switzerland as a consultant with Blue Infinity, I spent a couple of years in Switzerland moving from one company to the other through contract work, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Philip Morris, HPi and other Fortune 500 companies, Then I got offered a contract with the United Nations, where I spent the rest of my time in Switzerland.
With my first and only son Izak, on the way I moved back to Malta and took a job at MuleSource as a Research & Development Manager where I headed the educational program for MuleSource amongst others. After my contract expired I moved to Education again spending a further 4 years in higher education. During all this time I owned and ran three companies, the largest one being AVANTE' Group of Companies with branches in Malta, Libya, Tunis and Canada. Following I was asked to move to Libya as a defence and security consultant. That was a scary and satisfying time.
Following Libya, I joined the Ministry of Education and Employment in Malta, where I occupy the post of Educational Officer for Computing & ICT, basically managing the curriculum of both subjects on a National Level.
Including sub-contracted work and work at various companies I worked directly on projects for the following international companies (the ones I can remember):
Countries I have worked in:
